Triggered by a tweet from my friend Alyssa. About owning decisions and following one own steps to happiness. I feel, somewhere in life we lost a bit of ourselves. When we’re kids, adults dare us to dream big, believe in endless possibilities, and push our goals. Then you grow up, and sometime down that line, you let other people help you believe “No, I can’t do this. That’s a pipe dream.” Or you just gave up on it because you had to pay bills. For example, accountants. This is not an attack on accountants, just an example please. I understand if you’re parents are accountants, you may have dreamt to become just like mommy and daddy. However, if that is not the case, honestly, who in their childhood said, “I want to be an accountant” when they were growing up. I see it all too often, people who go through the appropriate education to get into a career that they “love” yet wake up every morning thinking “Damn, gotta go to work.” Who told you, when it was too late to be chasing a dream. If you don’t like what you’re doing, STOP DOING IT! Go find something else that will make you happy.
My credentials? Let’s see, I’ve gone through a few highly expensive universities. The first one was the right one, but I was talked into a change of mind by friends, family, etc. I’ve had a few jobs and before i was 21 cleared a decent 6 figure salary. I hated that job, it made me feel shitty I hated my life and hated the negative potential of what I was doing, but I was good at it. In the meantime, I completely intend to go back to school and finish what I started in due time. I have other passions which I am thoroughly pursuing in order to certify that I can be happy doing them for the long haul. I have taken big risk and lost and have taken big risk and won. You can’t win big betting the minimum. Life is a risk and in order to get what you want you have to be willing to risk it all. What happens if you lose? Well, ask Donald Trump, he’s filed for bankruptcy more than anybody. Currently, I’m nowhere near where I was 7 years ago as far as the standard idea of “success” goes, but I’m happier and enjoy life now more pursuing things that most people think are either crazy, ridiculous, or impossible.
If you think starting over is a waste of time, you’re crazy. I think spending another second doing something that doesn’t make you happy is the greatest waste of time ever.
“If you love life, don’t waste time, for time is what life is made up of.”
-Bruce Lee
“Success is the sum of small efforts, repeated, day in and day out.”
-Robert Collier
Sad truth of the matter, your biggest doubters will likely be people close to you. When people haven’t tried hard enough to reach their own dreams, they will try to stop you from reaching yours too. You can’t listen to these people. Believe in yourself and believe in what you want. Life is easy, decide what you want and go get it. Patience will help, it may take a while, but only you can deny yourself from what you really want.
But hey, maybe I was just absent from class when they taught “It’s too late to be happy”
Laugh, smile and be well,
